CTP005-Community and Residential Care for Older People
Helpful Tips for Older People to Create a Safe Living Environment

Introduction:
Universal design is an emerging approach to create environments which are usable for a wide spectrum of people with different needs, including children, older people and disabled people. Using the universal design principles for home design, older people can reduce daily living difficulties due to normal ageing changes, such as difficulty picking up objects, frequent bending and injuries due to the location of electric sockets being too low. The use of assistive devices can help to preserve energy and help to increase the efficiency and safety of older people when performing household chores in a safe and relaxed environment. This seminar aims to introduce the concept of universal design and assistive devices and its application to create a safe living environment.
